The abrupt nature of warming events recorded in Greenland ice-cores during the last glacial has generated much debate over their underlying mechanisms. Here, we present joint marine and terrestrial analyses from the Portuguese Margin, showing a succession of cold stadials and warm interstadials over the interval 35–57 ka. Heinrich stadials 4 and 5 contain considerable structure, with a short ...
    • Monitoring temporal trends of dioxins, organochlorine pesticides and chlorinated paraffins in pooled serum samples collected from Northern Norwegian women: The MISA cohort study

Xu, Shanshan; Hansen, Solrunn; Rautio, Arja; Riitta-Järvelin, Marjo; Abass, Khaled; Rysä, Jaana; Palaniswamy, Saranya; Huber, Sandra; Grimalt, Joan O.; Dumas, Pierre; Odland, Jon Øyvind (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2021-08-30)
The ubiquitous presence of legacy and emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environmental matrices poses a potential hazard to the humans and creating public health concerns. The present study aimed to evaluate dioxins, dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and chlorinated paraffins (CPs) concentrations in serum of women (postpartum, pregnant ...
    • Particle sources and downward fluxes in the eastern Fram strait under the influence of the west Spitsbergen current

Sanchez-Vidal, Anna; Veres, Oriol; Langone, Leonardo; Ferré, Benedicte; Calafat, Antoni; Canals, Miquel; Durrieu de Madron, Xavier; Heussner, Serge; Mienert, Jurgen; Grimalt, Joan O.; Pusceddu, Antonio; Danovaro, Roberto (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2015-06-10)
<p>The carbon cycle of the Arctic Ocean is tightly regulated by land–atmosphere–cryosphere–ocean interactions. Characterizing these environmental exchanges and feedbacks is critical to facilitate projections of the carbon cycle under changing climate conditions. The environmental drivers of sinking particles including organic carbon (OC) to the deep-sea floor are investigated with four moorings ...
    • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) as sentinels for the elucidation of Arctic environmental change processes: a comprehensive review combined with ArcRisk project results

Carlsson, Pernilla; Breivik, Knut; Brorström-Lundén, Eva; Cousins, Ian; Christensen, Jesper; Grimalt, Joan O.; Halsall, Crispin; Kallenborn, Roland; Abass, Khaled; Lammel, Gerhard; Munthe, John; MacLeod, Matthew; Odland, Jon Øyvind; Pawlak, Janet; Rautio, Arja; Reiersen, Lars-Otto; Schlabach, Martin; Stemmler, Irene; Wilson, Simon; Wöhrnschimmel, Henry (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2018-06-28)
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be used as chemical sentinels for the assessment of anthropogenic influences on Arctic environmental change. We present an overview of studies on PCBs in the Arctic and combine these with the findings from ArcRisk—a major European Union-funded project aimed at examining the effects of climate change on the transport of contaminants to and their behaviour of in ...
    • Variations in serum concentrations of selected organochlorines among delivering women in Argentina. The EMASAR study

Hansen, Solrunn; Nieboer, Evert; Bravo, Natalia; Økland, Inger; Matiocevich, Silvina; Álvarez, Marisa V.; Nilsen, Stein Tore; Grimalt, Joan O.; Odland, Jon Øyvind (Journal article; Tidsskriftartikkel; Peer reviewed, 2017-09-29)
The EMASAR study is the first study to describe the body burden of OCs in Argentinian women after delivery. In total, 698 maternal serum samples from Salta (n ¼ 498) and Ushuaia (n ¼ 200) were collected in 2011–2012 and analyzed for a total of 7 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 12 pesticide-related compounds. Only 11 of the compounds had detection rates above 60% in one or both places. Compared ...
